Pre-release ASAP Utilities version 4.2.2 RC1

I have just released a pre-release of the new version of ASAP Utilities which contains several extended utilities (mainly import/export) and a few bug fixes.

I would like to thank everybody for their feedback!

New/improved

  • Export » Export worksheets as separate files...
Improved, you can now specify in which file-format you want to save the sheets.
If you have Excel 2000, 2002/XP or 2003 you can export the sheets in these formats:
      - Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)
      - CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
      - Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)
      - Text (Tab delimited unicode) (*.txt)
      - Text (Space delimited) (*.prn)
      - Text (Pipe delimited) (*.txt)
      - Text (Delimited by #) (*.txt)
      - DBF 4 (dBASE IV) (*.dbf)
      - DBF 3 (dBASE IV) (*.dbf)
In Excel 2007 you can save the worksheets in the following file formats:
      - Excel 2007 Workbook (*.xlsx)
      - Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)
      - CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
      - Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)
      - Text (Tab delimited unicode) (*.txt)
      - Text (Space delimited) (*.prn)
      - Text (Pipe delimited) (*.txt)
      - Text (Delimited by #) (*.txt)

  • Import » Insert (delimited) text file...
Improved, the import of pipe-delimited files has been implemented and you can now have the imported data automatically trimmed (remove leading and trailing spaces).

  • General
If you install ASAP Utilities you can choose to have it automatically added to the Excel menu for each user that logs in on the computer. This is also handy when you log in with normal user-rights and run the setup as an administrator.

  • Export » Export selected chart or range as image (file)...
The dialog will now automatically be closed after the export is completed.
  • General
    Several minor improvements.
The default location of the favorites menu file is no longer in the program files folder but instead in the user's application data folder.

Bugs fixed

  • Count duplicates
Didn't work correctly if one of the values in the list started with the less then (<) or greater then (>) sign. For example a list with values 8370N, 8384N, >82821N, >83381N incorrectly tagged the last two values as duplicates.
  • Formula » Change reference style (e.g. A1 to $A,1 etc.)...
The option "Convert formulas to absolute rows and relative columns (A$1)" incorrectly changed the references to relative rows and absolute columns ($A1)
  • Export » Export selection or active sheet as new file...
When you had a chart on a chartsheet and you had selected something withing that chart, for example the chartarea, the export didn't work and produced an error. This is now fixed.
A workaround was to not select the chartarea (click on the grey at the left/right to deselect it) and then do the export.
  • General
    Fixed a few small bugs.

Hi Bastien,

May the couple Live 1000 years.

In excel and Asap, there is one option "Centre across selection without merging". But it centres across the rows only. There should also be an option to centre across selected columns without merging them and with orientation of text at 0 degree.

Please add it to our wish list.

Hello Kanwalit,

Thank you for your email.

What you want is not possible in Excel or via ASAP Utilities.
Without using some tricky workarounds it cannot be done. The only workaround for such a thing is to use text boxes but that won't be as flexible as cells with text.

Kind regards,

Hi Bastien,

May the couple live 1000 years.
I recently used the utilitiy "Columns and Rows-> 13. Put Together rows or columns from several sheets" and "Import-> 10. Merge files together in a new file."

My comments are :

1. Have a look at the "RDB Merge" add-in from http://www.rondebruin.nl/merge.htm
It is a very nice add-in with several extended options.

2. The above add-in and yours utility require one improvement. Many a times we have Workbook/s and/or Worksheets containing data which is formatted and Labeled exactly the same (everything is same including the HEADING ROW or Header). The number of rows on each worksheet may / may not be same. E.g., many a times people make one sheet for each month in exactly the same way just to differentiate the monthly data. In such a case we only need to copy the data for each month below the other WITHOUT COPYING the Header Row and WITHOUT ANY EMPTY ROWS in between of them. But both the "RDB Merge" and "ASAP" are doing it the same way. So there should be an option to accommodate the above functionality.

Hi Bastien,

I am particularly interested in the DBF exporting, because this is the format ArcView GIS uses to import tables. If you use the Excel native DBF export facilities ArcView more often than not cannot read it correctly.

Hence my question, what is the difference between ASAP's DBF export and the standard Excel save as DBF type?

Regards, Teun

Bastien

Hello Teun,

The export to DBF in ASAP Utilities uses Excel to create the file. So the file format is exactly the same.

Several years ago I worked with ArcView (version 3.2). In that version you could import tables both in DBF format and in tab-delimited format.
Isn't it possible to import the tab-delimited text files in ArcView GIS?

Hello Kanwaljit,

Thank you for your feedback.
I'll send you an email to discuss the options and see what we can do.

Hi Bastien,

Just now a thought was passing through my mind.

We can freeze windows pane. Is there any way we can freeze "Worksheet Tab", so that a particular tab is always appearing on the left, whereas other tab names go on hiding when we move from one sheet to other.

Hello Kanwaljit,

In Excel this cannot be done. This can only be done with some workaround.
If you always want fast-access to the first tab you can use a range-name on that particular sheet and then use the name-box to quickly jump to that sheet.
I've done this too in the following utility:
Sheets » Create an index page with all sheets (clickable)…

Hi Bastien,

May the couple live 1000 years.

One wish.

There should be an option to
->insert after nth character
->delete nth character
