How to solve the error: "Compile Error in Hidden Module: ASAP..."

Published: September 4, 2017 (latest revision April 1, 2022)
reference id: QA0304

Problem

If you get an error similar to "Compile Error in Hidden Module: ASAP...", then there is something wrong is missing in Excel.

We've got this reported a few times, and got reported from 2 3 users that another program, called WPS Office, could somehow corrupt Excel/VBA when that program is uninstalled.
"...the problem started soon after I installed and immediately uninstalled WPS_office Suite."

We've haven't been able to reproduce this ourselves yet, and we've got it reported from 2 3 users only, but we mention it here in the FAQ anyway.

Solution 1

In general, we would recommend a repair of your Office installation when you get a similar error:
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

However, this is how our users fixed it:

Hi,

So, played around a bit more...tried to get it working with office 365, same error.
Then I remembered, I uninstalled that office free application the other day, WPS. (https://www.wps.com/) as it managed to make itself the default app for a number of MS doc types. So, I uninstalled office 365, re-installed WPS, and then reinstalled Office 2013 64bit again, problem has gone away.

seems like the uninstall for WPS screwed up VBA or something else....

Thanks for your quick response earlier though...

..don't know how I would survive without ASAP Utilities!

Solution 2

If you also get an error message similar to "Object library invalid or contains references to object definitions that could not be found" in addition to the above error, then you might also want to verify the following:

We also found a reference about this error related to outdated extender files (*.exd) from the Microsoft Forms Control package (part of MS Office, used to display userforms, buttons, checkboxes etc.).

Please perform following steps to solve this error:
1. Close all the Microsoft Office Applications
2. Start Windows Explorer (make sure to include hidden and system files and folders)
3. Navigate to C:\Users\\AppData\Microsoft\Forms
4. Delete all the ".exd" files in this folder (they will be automatically re-created by Excel when you start it.
5. Navigate to C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\VBE
6. Delete all the ".exd" files in this folder (they will be automatically re-created by Excel when you start it.
7. Reboot the computer (this is not always necessary, but better safe than sorry)
8. Restart Excel.
