Excel tip: How to change the font size on the sheet tabs

Date: 30 october 2006

You cannot change the font size of the sheet-tabs in Excel. However you can adjust the settings in Windows to change this, but that will also affect other application.
In Windows XP (but similar in other Windows versions):
  • Right-click on an empty spot on you desktop and choose "Properties".
  • In the "Display Properties" dialog choose "Appearance" and then click on the "Advanced" button.
    Windows Display Properties
  • In the "Advanced Appearance" dialog choose the item "Scrollbar" and adjust the size.
    Display Properties advanced appearance scrollbar
On my computer the default value is 17. If you increase that number the sheet-tabs in Excel will become larger. A lower number will show smaller sheet-tabs. Adjust the number to fit your needs. Depending on your settings, you may have to restart your computer to see the changes.
Example default size:

Example smaller size:
Sheet tab size smaller
The benefit of the smaller size is that more information can be displayed at the same time.
