Excel tip: Align currency symbols to the left

To have the currency symbol appear on the left of the cell rather than just to the left of the number, include for example, $* or �* followed by a space at the beginning of the number format.
The example on the left uses the number format: "�* #,##0;�* -#,##0" (without the quotes).
The * means repeat the next character, which in this case is a space, enough times to fill the width of the column.
