Excel tip: Align currency symbols to the left

Date: 10 september 2001

To have the currency symbol appear on the left of the cell rather than just to the left of the number, include for example, $* or €* followed by a space at the beginning of the number format.
The example on the left uses the number format: "€* #,##0;€* -#,##0" (without the quotes).
The * means repeat the next character, which in this case is a space, enough times to fill the width of the column.

€      1250,0 € 1250,0
€     -1250,0 € -1250,0
