How to solve the error: 'Automation error', 'Unspecified error', 'Object library invalid' or 'Compile error'

Published: December 5, 2018 (latest revision Januari 14, 2024)
reference id: QA0312

These errors are an indication that there is a problem with the installation of Excel. These are very rare errors.

If you get the message 'Automation error', 'Unspecified error', 'Object library invalid' or 'Compile error in hidden module ASAP...' when you open Excel after installing ASAP Utilities, the problem is caused by a problem with the installation of Microsoft Office. There is not a problem with our add-in and re-installing ASAP Utilities does not solve it.

The problem is often caused by un-installing a trial version of Excel, or an Office patch that was automatically run by Windows. It is sometimes caused by getting Office pre-installed on the PC when you purchase the PC or sometimes by other software that corrupts a part of the Excel installation.

Please run Office Repair:
# Microsoft Office Support: Repair an Office application
Repair an Office application
If that doesn't solve it, then we recommend to completely uninstall Office, reboot your computer (important!) and reinstall.

One of our competitors, Add-ins.com, has written a very detailed article about the 'automation error' with detailed step-by-step instructions on how to fix this:
# How to Repair Microsoft Excel - What to do if add-ins do not run
https://www.add-ins.com/support/automation_error.htm
https://www.add-ins.com/how_to_repair_office.htm

Or you can try the following from Microsoft Support:
# Fix Outlook and Office 365 problems with Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=789057

If all that fails to solve the error, then we were informed by a user that creating and switching to a new user account on the computer can solve it.
